Taking Stock / My 26th Birthday

taking stock on my 26th birthday

Today is my 26th birthday!

For the first time ever, I’m not crazy excited for my birthday. I mean, I’m still excited. Let me put this in context: I have always been crazy about my birthday. I love it – yes, I realize how selfish that sounds. In fact, in 2nd grade, I packed a duffel back with the intent of running away, before realizing my birthday party was the next day. I figured I needed to wait to get my presents (Barbies! So many Barbies!) and pizza. So, I waited until after my birthday party, before I headed down the trail to Cherry Pond. (I was only out there about 25 minutes before I got bored and came home.)

This year, it feels different. Maybe because I’m getting kicked off my parents’ insurance, or maybe because the wedding is way more exciting. Either way, this year’s birthday is a little more low-key. I thought it might be nice to do a little taking stock for this one. Maybe it will be a tradition? I’d love to be able to look back each year and see where I was at on April 6. I’ve taken the standard list that has been floating around blogs for years now, and tweaked it a bit to fit an annual list. Here goes!

Something I learned / That the whole ‘creative entrepreneur’ thing is maybe not for me. Maybe it is, but I’ve been so hell-bent on working for myself and doing something creative because we’re all told that’s what we’re supposed to want to do. I’m learning to allow myself to explore more options (because I’m 26 and I still don’t have my professional life figured out. So what?)
Something new I tried / YouTube! It was so scary to try, but I’m happy I did.
What I read / Wildflower by Drew Barrymore, Skin Cleanse by Adina Grigore, The Vacationers by Emma Straub, Wild & Free (actually never finished), Modern Lovers, Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo, Sweet Bitter, Why Not Me?, Talking As Fast As I Can.
Something I accomplished / I paid off all my credit card debt!
Currently reading / Designing Your Life and Just The Essentials
Favorite memory / Getting engaged! Since that’s more of a big life memory, I’ll throw in a second: visiting New York City for the first time with one of my best friends.
Most worn / Black pants, suede ankle boots and my denim jacket.
Work life / Still at the architecture firm, but now full time accounting. Upgrade!
Travel / We got our camper in September and have taken it to Cape Lookout and Bend. In January we went to Pacific Grove, as usual. And in October I went to NYC for the first time!
Wish for the next year / I’d like to spend more time pursuing creative hobbies, just for fun. It’s hard to fit in with a full time job plus blogging/YouTube, but it’s good for the soul. I’d like to take out my camera more, paint, and learn to hand letter.
